    Adaptive Torque Estimation for an IPMSM with Cross-Coupling and Parameter Variations

    This paper presents a new adaptive torque estimation algorithm for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with parameter variations and cross-coupling between d- and q-axis dynamics. All cross-coupled, time-varying, or uncertain terms that are not part of the nominal flux equations are included in two equivalent mutual inductances, which are described using the equivalent d- and q-axis back electromotive forces (EMFs). The proposed algorithm estimates the equivalent d- and q-axis back EMFs in a recursive and stability-guaranteed manner, in order to compute the equivalent mutual inductances between the d- and q-axes. Then, it provides a more accurate and adaptive torque equation by adding the correction terms obtained from the computed equivalent mutual inductances. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that torque estimation errors are remarkably reduced by capturing and compensating for the inherent cross-coupling effects and parameter variations adaptively, using the proposed algorithm.111Ysciescopu

    Epigenetic Role of Histone Lysine Methyltransferase and Demethylase on the Expression of Transcription Factors Associated with the Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition of Lung Adenocarcinoma Metastasis to the Brain

    Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the epigenetic role of histone lysine methylation/demethylation on the expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) associated transcriptional factors (TFs) during the metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma to the brain. Methods: Paired samples of lung adenocarcinoma and brain metastasis (BM) were analyzed in 46 individual patients. Both samples were obtained by surgical resection or biopsy of the lung and brain. The paraffin-fixed formalin-embedded samples were obtained from the pathology archives in our institute. In samples of lung adenocarcinoma and BM, immunohistochemical staining was performed for epithelial markers, mesenchymal markers, EMT-TFs, histone lysine methyltransferase and demethylase. Results: The immunoreactivity of EMT-TFs such as Slug (15.6% vs. 42.6%, p = 0.005), Twist (23.6% vs. 45.9%, p = 0.010) and ZEB1 (15.0% vs. 55.9%, p = 0.002) was increased in BM compared with that in lung adenocarcinoma. Epigenetic inducers such as H3K4 methyltransferase (MLL4, p = 0.018) and H3K36me3 demethylase (UTX, p = 0.003) were statistically increased, and epigenetic repressors such as EZH2 (H3K27 methyltransferase, p = 0.046) were significantly decreased in BM compared with those in lung adenocarcinoma. The expression of UTX-ZEB1 (R2 linear = 1.204) and MLL4-Slug (R2 linear = 0.987) was increased in direct proportion, and EZH2-Twist (R2 linear = −2.723) decreased in reverse proportion. Conclusions: The results suggest that certain histone lysine methyltransferase/demethylase, such as MLL4, UTX, and EZH2, regulate the expression of EMT-TFs such as Slug, ZEB1, and Twist epigenetically, which may thereby influence cancer metastasis from the lung to the brain. © 2020 by the authors.     Gait performance and foot pressure distribution during wearable robot-assisted gait in elderly adults

    Abstract Background A robotic exoskeleton device is an intelligent system designed to improve gait performance and quality of life for the wearer. Robotic technology has developed rapidly in recent years, and several robot-assisted gait devices were developed to enhance gait function and activities of daily living in elderly adults and patients with gait disorders. In this study, we investigated the effects of the Gait-enhancing Mechatronic System (GEMS), a new wearable robotic hip-assist device developed by Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd., Korea, on gait performance and foot pressure distribution in elderly adults. Methods Thirty elderly adults who had no neurological or musculoskeletal abnormalities affecting gait participated in this study. A three-dimensional (3D) motion capture system, surface electromyography and the F-Scan system were used to collect data on spatiotemporal gait parameters, muscle activity and foot pressure distribution under three conditions: free gait without robot assistance (FG), robot-assisted gait with zero torque (RAG-Z) and robot-assisted gait (RAG). Results We found increased gait speed, cadence, stride length and single support time in the RAG condition. Reduced rectus femoris and medial gastrocnemius muscle activity throughout the terminal stance phase and reduced effort of the medial gastrocnemius muscle throughout the pre-swing phase were also observed in the RAG condition. In addition, walking with the assistance of GEMS resulted in a significant increase in foot pressure distribution, specifically in maximum force and peak pressure of the total foot, medial masks, anterior masks and posterior masks. Conclusion The results of the present study reveal that GEMS may present an alternative way of restoring age-related changes in gait such as gait instability with muscle weakness, reduced step force and lower foot pressure in elderly adults. In addition, GEMS improved gait performance by improving push-off power and walking speed and reducing muscle activity in the lower extremities. Trial registration NCT02843828

    Dynamic Kinetic Resolution of Diarylmethanols with an Activated Lipoprotein Lipase

    We explored the kinetic resolution of 31 different diarylmethanols with an activated lipoprotein lipase (LPL-D1) which was about 3000-fold more active than its native counterpart in organic solvent. Most of the substrates tested were accepted by LPL-D1 with good to high enantioselectivity in the kinetic resolution. Next, we explored the dynamic kinetic resolutions (DKRs) of these substrates (24 out of 31) using LPL-D1 and a ruthenium-based racemization catalyst in combination, which provided satisfactory yields (71-96%) and high enantiopurities (90-99% cc).
